I used to do that hand behind the back thing, too, and my older dog would just stop sniffing and patiently sit and stare (and drool) at me. I never really perfected anything with her but I certainly learned that was not the answer! With Hunter I always start the search with food in one hand and just refill from the treat pouch as needed. Hunter may look at me when I poke my hand in the pouch, but he will quickly get back to work when he does not get rewarded. We still don’t have it down perfectly, but we are getting better.
