    A lot of the time the handler don’t SEE the pen on the floor – it’s fun to leave it lined up along a stripe on the floor <g>, so it is true the handler isn’t giving the dog any clues. I’m sure that contributes to the dog not ‘getting it’. 🙂

    OTOH, once a dog DOES find the ink pen on the floor, it seldom fools them a second time, even if it’s months later that they see that particular trick again. Maybe they are just more experienced overall, or maybe they remember – not sure which. But the more experienced dogs seem to rely more on their nose and let that take them right to the “hidden in plain sight” pen. 😉
