FYI, my little Blackie has also had her issues with being reactive to both people and dogs. However, as a result of both the training we’ve done (agility and nose work) and a LOT of competition in both sports, she has improved significantly. In our case, she’s just very afraid of any new and unfamiliar situation, and figures that her best defense is to bark first and make herself look VERY fierce. Finally, after 4-1/2 years she seems to have figured out that new people are reasonably likely to be nice to her.
And like you, until Blackie (and her adopted sister, Biscuit) joined our family, I never participated in any dog sports. Blackie is the one who told me we needed to do so, and I’m so glad she did!
Looking forward to starting our class “together”!
