CE930: Case Study Instruction

Hi All – this is your one and ONLY lesson for this course! 🙂

Remember, our topic is “Case Studies for Intro to Odor & NW1 Trial Prep”

As the title suggests this is about introducing dogs to odor and/or NW1 Trial Preparation. You can combine these if you have a variety of students. This could be one exercise or class to the next or with time in between. We are including clinics and private lessons in order to accommodate those of you who have other formats for teaching.

GOLD Students: Based on the topic, you will run and videotape the exercises and classes/clinics/lessons with your students PRIOR TO THE COURSE STARTING. We want to have ample time to prepare! Your Case Study should be ready to present by May 7, 2019. (You will have staggered presentation dates to spread them out slightly.)

I am here to help you if you need it!

This will be your unique CASE STUDY to be shared with the group. You will videotape your class/clinic/private lessons and choose 3 students to share with us. You may wish to show the progression of exercises in the VERY FIRST ODOR CLASS/clinic/lesson or a series of classes/clinics/lessons. Feel free to include difficult challenges that may not have gone as expected and would like some feedback suggestions. Each student video will be no more than 3 minutes in length unless you feel the exercise warrants sharing more. So you’ll post 9 videos total. (You do not need to have long videos.) You MAY combine the videos if they’re short, around 3-4 minutes total, for each student OR for the same students, different exercises into THREE videos. (It’s too hard to watch videos longer than that.) Please explain what each of your videos are so we know what we’re seeing.

In your thread you are going to use your first post to give us this info:

  • General information about the students we’ll be seeing – first nosework dog? How long has each student been working primary? Specific challenges? Etc.
  • How long have you been teaching K9NW?
  • How long has it been before this class that you taught an Intro to Odor class?
  • Did you anticipate any particular challenges with the dogs or the exercises in general?
  • Did the exercises go as expected?
  • What adjustments for any of the exercises or for individual dogs did you have to make?
  • What would you do differently?
  • What exercises would you do next, either the following week or soon afterwards to solidify the learning and continue the progression?
  • Any other information that would be helpful for us to know?
  • Any questions for me? (Questions and comments to the rest of the class can go in the Discussion Forum)

After you answer these questions you will share the links to your videos (uploaded to YouTube, unlisted) within the body of your next post in a way that will display within the post. (See the “2019 TIPS” sticky post with the topics listed in the forum.)

Again, you can choose to merge short videos or group them together in a post by exercise or by dog and use multiple posts to share them. Remember, we want to understand how and what you’re teaching so don’t feel the need to only show the perfect ones. Give US good learning, too! 😉
