So, the hunt itself can be very rewarding for the dog, and for some dogs, the hunt may be more exciting than the reward. You might need to up the value of the reward to something really amazing – let her know what totally awesome treat you have then get in and reward early a few times – then just hang back a moment to see if she will give you a stronger “hey, where’s my paycheck?” look. I met one handler at PA camp last year whose dog just did not care that much about food, so she switched to a toy reward, which has worked well.
